Markets

Methodology & points:

  • Included: Results from Duotrope searches for paying non-fee-charging markets. Nominees for a Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 2020-2024. Clifford Garstang’s 2024 Literary Magazine Rankings based on Pushcarts in the last decade for Fiction and Poetry. Erika Krouse’s detailed spreadsheet for details on sim subs, pay, etc.
  • Points: Garstang rankings: 0-9.5: 1 point, 10-19.5: 2, etc. Krouse rankings: 0.5-49.5: 1, 50-99.5=2, etc. Added 1 point for each year they appeared in the BASS in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 and in the Wigleaf Top 50 of 2023 and 2024.
  • Errors and Omissions: Some magazines will be listed as only Poetry (if they were only recognized for poetry) or only Fiction (if they were only recognized for fiction) when they publish both. I have not yet gone to every site to check info from Garstang or Krouse or to get URLs. I’m not listing markets which received zero points, have “press” or “books” or “anthology” in the name (on the assumption they’re not periodicals), are closed, or charge submission fees over $3.
  • Always double-check this information with the magazine or journal.
  • Last updated: 23 October 2024. Currently 620 markets.
