Manuscript Review:
- Fiction: $100 for up to 2,500 words + $0.006/word thereafter
- e.g. a 6,000-word short story: $100 + 3,500×$0.006 = $121.00 while an 80,000-word novel: $100 + 77,500×$0.006 = $565.00
- Poetry: $100 for up to 1,250 words + $0.012/word thereafter
- e.g. a 5,000-word poetry collection: $100 + 3,750×$0.012 = $145
A manuscript review is a high-level analysis focusing on characterization, imagery, mechanics, pacing, plot, structure, and voice. I may also include some suggestions on grammar and spelling but my assumption is that you can handle simple proofreading and copy-editing on your own or with a professional editor. My rates are standardized to match the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia’s recommended prices; you can contact me directly or use WFNS as a go-between.

- Fiction and poetry: first hour free; $50/hour thereafter, billed in 15-minute increments
If you are unsure about how or where to submit your work, I encourage you to first use the many free or cheap resources available online, such as Duotrope, Submission Grinder, or Clifford Garstang’s or Erika Krouse’s market rankings, or Rebecca Makkai’s Writing Craft series. I occasionally take on clients to help with identifying markets for their work and/or honing their submissions.
