I saw crabapples at Dave’s Fruit & Veg today, and not having had any since I came home, grabbed a box. They’re smaller than usual because of Nova Scotia’s draught this summer. Here’s the apple crisp I made with them:

Topping:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup oats
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup butter
  • 1/2 tsp each baking powder, cinnamon, and vanilla extract

Instructions and other ingredients: Clean and cut up about 4-5 cups of apples, removing cores and seeds. Sprinkle lemon juice liberally over the apples. Combine topping ingredients. Mix about a third to half of the topping through the apples and put in a greased 8×8″ baking dish, top with remainder, and bake at 375°F for 40 minutes.
