The cover of Jane Austen, the Secret Radical by Helena Kelly, with Jane Austen's supposed silhouette cut from red-tinted black-and-white photos and letters from her life. On the book is a Halifax Public Library sticker. In the background is a grid of small paintings, out of focus.

My current read: Jane Austen, the Secret Radical by Helena Kelly. Pictured here with the installation at the Halifax main library of paintings on old catalog cards. I’m about halfway through – it’s fascinating. A lot of this is remedial for me, but quite a bit is also new. I didn’t know how totalitarian England was during the Napoleonic wars. Also for the first 2/3 of Austen’s life, abortion was legal! O_o
