A running tally of interesting, useful, hilarious, or explanatory posts elsewhere on the internet, arranged reverse-chronologically. I’ll start a new one of these monthly.

January 30: Save for later: Simple Sabotage Field Manual by United States Office of Strategic Services. Organizing resources: Chop Wood Carry Water (daily actions); Erin in the Morning (trans and queer news and actions); Letters from an American (news in historical context).

January 29: Further to yesterday’s: American Public Health Association, Main Street Alliance, National Council of Nonprofits, and SAGE are suing (if you can, throw a few dollars their way to help) and as a result, U. S. District Judge AliKhan has temporarily paused the directive. 23 State AGs are also suing; if you’re from AZ, CA, CT, DC, DE, HI, IL, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, NC, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OR, RI, VT, WA, or WI, you could send them a quick email thanking them. Also: write your Congresscritters, even if they are Republicans, and point out that not only is this expensive (due to all the lawsuits and chaos) and jeopardizes our financial stability, it directly challenges Congress’ authority. EDIT: They rescinded the memo! One more link: Dear Trans Kids, You Don’t Need the Government’s Permission to Exist (Teen Vogue).

January 28: Georgetown law prof Steve Vladeck on Trump freezing nearly all federal grants and loans. (This includes, apparently [nobody seems to be sure] Medicaid, SNAP, aid to universities and small business loans, child care, public safety, infrastructure, and more.)

January 26: Writing Inuit women back into the exploration history of the North and Northwest Passage. Also, CASA raid tip hotline for ICE activities: 1-888-214-6016.

January 25: Some news updates: What the Hell Is Going on at NIH? (Mother Jones); What the Trump administration did during its first week back in power (Guardian); ‘This is about power’: Indigenous immigrants face a second Trump administration (High Country News); Trump won. What happens now? (roundup at LGBTQ Nation). Also: writers, I have updated my markets listing for SFFH and lit periodicals.

January 23: YouTuber f4mi explains how to poison AI slop with .ass titles so grifters can’t rip off her videos (h/t MeFi).

January 22: Roundups of Trump day one (Jan 21st) EOs: Ars Technica, Jurist; Human Rights Campaign on day one EOs related to human rights; RAICES also has an ongoing immigration-related roundup.

January 20: Nothing of note happened on Jan 20, so enjoy Ann Reardon’s Facebook video on how to make edible geodes. JKJK of course some stuff happened on Jan 20th, like: metro Detroit school districts are celebrating MLK Day by giving back to the community. Also, Rebecca Makkai shared this amazing post of Zillow toilets for… some reason.

January 19: Rebecca Solnit shared an Electronic Frontier Foundation explainer on preventing Facebook from gathering and/or monetizing your data.

January 18: This is going around my socials: How to Protect Yourself During an Immigration Raid (ACLU TX) and ILRC red cards to carry with similar information. If you want to help, I recommend donating to RAICES, TIRRC, or their equivalent in your state.

January 17: Rebecca Solnit shared a Facebook post by Tobias Barrington Wolff (U Penn law prof and former Obama advisor) which explains why the Equal Rights Amendment is still up in the air.

January 12: I started posting daily small press books on Bluesky (look at the quote-reposts) and Mastodon (look at the replies), almost entirely pulled from my Metafilter round-ups. I also keep a list at Bookshop (I’m an affiliate, so if you buy from that list, I’ll make a small amount of money; if you buy from a Metafilter link they’ll make it).
