Our friend John was in town for a few days this week, so we took him to Halifax to explore Citadel Hill and Public Gardens, and explored the waterfront, and out to High Head Trail (Dr. Bill Freedman Nature Reserve) in Prospect, NS as well as Peggy’s Cove and Lawrencetown Beach. On the High Head Trail, we saw a lot of these:
I’d never noticed them before but my phone identifies them as a purple pitcher plant, which is a carnivorous plant also called turtle socks or the side-saddle flower. The rain collects in the green structure under the purplish flower, where bugs drown and get eaten by the flower. I had no idea that Nova Scotia had carnivorous plants!
