In a friends-locked livejournal entry from a year ago, I wrote: “I just figured out what it is I like about Barack Obama. He reminds me of Trudeau. I’m not talking about politics at all. I don’t think Obama is going to bring an October Crisis to America (oh, wait! we’ve already got one!) or give us a new charter of rights and freedoms or bring in official languages or anything like that; I’m just talking about attitude and how people respond to him. Trudeau stood for change, and was younger than his political opponents, and in touch with youth culture, and so on. Obviously, I don’t remember Trudeau’s early years – he had been Prime Minister for five years already when I was born – but he overshadowed politics throughout my formative years. I really hope this isn’t just wishful thinking, because we could really use somebody as passionate and effective as Trudeau right now.”
